East Bay Modern Addition

ALBANY, CA

Project Manager: Jos Reynaud

Photographer: Mark Compton

A young family with two small children needed their California bungalow to work harder. The existing layout lacked comfortable living space and room for the family to grow, so the project became a significant reorganization rather than a simple addition. The main level was reimagined as an open sequence of living, dining, kitchen, and family spaces running front to back, connecting the entry to the rear garden. The kitchen sits between the living and dining rooms, creating a natural compression that organizes the flow without dividing it. Windows were carefully placed to bring light into a tight urban lot. Personal touches woven throughout, an abstract painting positioned to be seen from multiple angles, a friend’s banana leaf wallpaper framing the open staircase, give the home a warmth that feels genuinely lived in. Upstairs, a new level was set toward the rear to capture Bay Area views from the primary bedroom, while the existing porch arches were retained to keep the home in conversation with its neighbors. The exterior combines white stucco with dark Yakisugi siding, a Japanese technique that uses fire to char cedar, making it naturally water and insect resistant while adding rich tonal depth in sunlight. A home that fits how this family actually lives, with room to gather, room to grow, and details that reward a closer look.

We love our home. That is the simplest statement we can make about the outcome of working with the Eisenmann team. We decided to work with them based on their design sensibilities and deep experience designing homes in our local area. What we got was extreme care and attention to detail that caused our general contractor to state that the construction documents were the most detailed they had ever seen. For us, that was comforting to know that we had worked with architects that had thought through so many of the key elements that we may encounter in what is inevitably a long and difficult process. Beyond the details, their collaborative process and guiding hand in design resulted in what we believe is not only a beautiful home but one that is also so comfortable to live in. We feel extremely lucky to have the home we do and just as lucky to have found the Eisenmann team to help us make it a reality.
